Sajmiste Logo

.............................................................................................
It is an incredible honor and a pleasure to have the words accompanying the logo designed by Milton Glaser and Mirko Ilic
written in my letters.

For a while, B92 has been media wise supporting a group of people trying to fulfill a noble and a very important idea – for Belgrade to get a Memorial Center Sajmiste. Our knowledge on this is inadmissibly poor and what I’ve heard over the past couple of years about getting the public’s attention on this is outrageous, surprising and incredible. One of those knots keeping us in collective fog.

Once a Belgrade’s pride, from 1941 to 1944 Sajmiste became a concentration camp. Wikipedia states that at least 32.000 Serbs and 7000 – 8000 Jews were killed there. And here is where it was happening, in case it’s not clear. I pass by this place every day when I go to work, and for the past two years, I remembered them every single day.

If you have not seen a documentary Sajmiste – the History of a Concentration Camp yet, it is about time you do so. We need to be aware of our past, “digest” it, accept it and learn something from it. This action seems to have started from the last point – the logo for the future memorial center.

By creating this logo, Milton and Mirko did not only give us the graphical solution, they gladly provided their help in promoting this idea by involving their names in each public mention. The thing I can still not believe is that besides their names, also stands my name! It does not contribute to the promotion, but makes a wonderful triangle Mirko mentioned at the press conference – someone from there (Milton), someone from there and here (Mirko) and someone from here (me). I would also like to add a dimension of generations involved and represented by the three of us, something that additionally leaves me enormously touched.

Tabula font, not in global distribution yet and still used exclusively and in small amounts, seems to have been waiting for this moment. It was created based on classic Roman capital, and basically, it was supposed to be gentler than Trajan. I think that here, in a proper, ceremonial and dignified but also warm and soft way, it contributes well to the logo.

Since its promotion that occurred on Friday, I’ve been waiting to think of something simple, short and clear to say here, but I am so overwhelmed by emotions that in the end, all that I can say is: I AM HONORED TO BE A PART OF THIS.

Respect! I am now somehow reassured that it actually does pay off to be knowledgeable, skillful, inspired and particular about your work. This combination wins once again!
