Feminine, Subtle & Bizarre

Nesto podsmeha i malo prepustanja.

.....................................................................................................
The porcelain has the miraculous aura of bourgeois-collecting and camp combination, as Marija Skoko would say. I’m paraphrasing.

Now, I love this at some core, essential, crucially familiar level and it is very hard for me to recommend her exhibition with at least some objective insight. If I try really hard, I will tell you that what’s contributing largely to the latest update of her works’ atmosphere is that fact she spent some time in New York and got involved with porcelain there. Although we will mostly enjoy the objects made out of colored and sometimes glazed terracotta at this exhibition, porcelain is the basic idea and the starting point.

Besides the New York one, also some strange LA-like tone of bizarreness is felt, a direct collision of unspeakable richness and even more inexpressible poorness, or this is the America as a whole and its filtrating through one subtle local view.

This time, while put together as a unit for the current exhibition in Dom Omladine[1], the
touch of feminine is dominant. Yearning and the ambivalent relationship with this feeling. Some mocking and some giving into. The exhibition is underlined by the famous Once upon a dream piece from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. This will help you to understand the kind of humor, edge, cynicism but also the softness, sentiment and dedication which in this specific mix make the A Wish is to Wish exhibition.

Marija grasped her recognizable expression within the materials she works with, the expression drastically different than all the others coming out of the local schools, both sculptors and ceramicists. This is much bigger than the technique, a beautiful painting in three dimensions. You will not believe when you look at the items exhibited very closely. You will be enchanted by the powdered face and miraculously rosy cheeks of the large female figure, looking like a childhood doll. And then her classically modeled hair and the drapery she is tranquilly and disturbingly laying on in the front of you. Smaller than the actual size, just enough to revolt something inside your head.

If you are missing subtleness in Belgrade, hit Dom Omladine, the exhibition is opened until February 1st only.
